QGCIO

QGCIO stands for Queensland Government Chief Information Office, this office is promoting the BPMN, under the banner of Business Process Improvement (BPI).

BPI hints that the existing process needs improvement, this hower is not always the case. But that is just me being picky.

Methodology

Well I do not think it is... (as yet)

It is a great start, but it does not yet provide an end-to-end solution or guidance on how and what to do, within the Queensland Government arena. It focuses on the way how we can use BPMN, as it cuts down the existing notation to the simplest form. Which is good, as some of the notation bits can be an over kill. (Do not make diagrams for the sake of diagrams :-))

It also provides some matrixes (BPI Workbook) that assist in the capture of requirements and adds some scoring. This reminds me of some SIX SIGMA stuff, but again it is very high level and limited. Which most likely is the intention, it is a challeng to create one size fits all type matrix, although possible.

From my point of view it is a METHOD, not a methodology. It only addresses a small part of the the overall business analysis framework at this stage, and external knowledge and experience is required to complete the framework.

Conclusion

It is a good bit of work and, I am trying to promote it where I can, however it is only a small part of the potential Business Architecture at the moment.

It leaves the Business Analyst in the air and wondering how to go from the high level all the way down to the Business Process and creating a document that can be handed over to the vendor for either coding or configuration.

Perhaps that was it's intention, I think it is is missing something......
