BPMN/UML Model
It is an abstract representation of a business that provides a simplified look of WHAT the business currently does.
The model is a growing document and should be re-used by future business requirements and business process changes, the model must provide input into the overall Business Architecture.
The top level of the subject area model will be represented on a lower level in the overall Business Architecture. This is required to complement and enhance other business processes and developments that have a relationship with the subject area.

Why doing it?
- To understand the business as it exists today. We cannot start making changes if we do not know what it is we do.
- To understand where the business is going, what is it we going to change.
- Get an understanding of all aspects of the business and agreement on what it is we are doing in the business.
- It will provide a subject area (Point-of-focus) which is needed to discuss and resolve business requirements and issues.
Audience
The audience of this document is typically the “Business” being the stakeholders and the reference groups. They provide input on what the existing business processes are and agree with the document content.
UML Elements
Business Process Modeling has its own notation known as BPMN. The difference between BPMN and the UML Activity Diagram notation is very small, however the notation uses graphics that are a better representation of what the business does.
It is best to model the business processes in the BPMN as that is where it is used for, but there is no real restriction using UML Activity Diagrams.
